lyrics

Être sur le bord de l'eau

Sur le dos des vagues,
Les rayons du soleil se brisent
On dirait des étoiles;
Myriades de points d'énergie
D'une beauté sans égale;
Mini-soleils aquatiques

Sert soudain de rivage;
Un bruit difficile à saisir,
Chanson primordiale
Douée d'un pouvoir inouï;

Quelle splendeur
Être sur le bord de l'eau!
D'une entité pareille,
Infiniment subtile.
D'une profondeur
Inimaginée;

Passer deux semaines en camping;
L'ivresse de l'enfance
D'une insouciance qui rend mélancolique.

Quand enfin j'y entre,
C'est d'abord à petite échelle
Que je ressens l'onde
D'une pulsation fantastique,
Un coeur immense qui gronde;
Tonnerre sous-marin lascif

Quelle splendeur,
Être sur le bord de l'eau!
D'une entité pareille,
Infiniment subtile.
D'une profondeur
Inimaginée;

To be at the water’s edge (English Translation By: Galen Hartley)

On the backs of the waves
The sun's rays break
Scattering into stars
Countless points of energy
Unequaled in beauty
Aquatic suns in miniature
Which slip and parade in gentle chaos

And the raw symphony of the waves
Tearing over my left ear
As though it were the shore itself
A sound that won’t be held
Primordial song
Of incredible power
the great wild mystery which breaks the human heart
And cures it

What splendor
At the water's edge!
Such an entity
Infinitely subtle
Of a depth
Unimagined
From the abyss to the glaciers,
Running sweet and fresh
Or salty as our tears

And then on my tongue
Awoken by the ocean
A lost dream washes over me
A family southbound
Into the holidays
And two weeks of camping
This child’s heart drunk on the world
A recklessness that leaves you blue

When finally I enter
The waves touch me with the weight of breath
And in one fantastic pulse
The titan’s heart rumbles, rejoices
Submerged, sensual thunder
Rises, falls
And beats my helpless mortal bones

What splendor
At the water's edge!
Such an entity
Infinitely subtle
Of a depth
Unimagined
From the abyss to the glaciers,
Running sweet and fresh
Or salty as our tears

On the backs of the waves
The sun's rays break
Scattering into stars...
